Default Should Elementalist even worry about a 2nd profession?

Right now I am playing through Prophecies with an Elementalist/Monk. I'm about level 18, and have Fire maxed and the Energy skill at a high enough level to make spells cost 15 points less. I don't see going any higher in Energy as the spells I'm currently using only cost 15 at most.

I use 6 Fire skills, mostly Direct Damage spells, plus the firestorm one. I don't have much else in the way of fire skills that I could see being useful right now. I mostly just need to nuke and the heros or friends do the rest. So it's not like I need to enchant yet or anything.

I have 2 monk skills, a res and a regen on my skill bar. I never use the regen anymore now that I have 2 monk heroes, and rarely use the rez. So I'm thinking it may be time to try to finish prophecies and start switching my 2ndary profession. So what's good for a PvE Elementalist that is basically just trying to get through the various campaigns?

Should I not even worry about 2ndary?

Can an elementalist farm later? Thanks all.

You can safely ignore your secondary or experiment with it if you are trying just to finish campaigns.

You can just try secondaries that grant you res skill (Monk, Ritualist, Paragon).

And you can also try secondaries that give you some extra tools: Mesmer, for example, will give you interrupts - you can slot in Cry of Frustration easily; Necromancer for Enfeebling Blood to reduce damage your group takes, etc ...

Best thing you can do now is starting to invest to earth magic and start using wards to support your group and argument monk healing ability by reducing damage group takes (ward against melee reduced damage taken basically by half, abuse it.) or put few points to water and keep foes snared - there will be less chance that they will move out of aoes and that fireballs with miss.

---

And yes, elementalist can farm. Earth magic provides ample about of buffs that increase survivability to the point that you take zero damage from most source as well as damage skills.

Actually, there are a lot of elementalist's builds which use the secondary profession. Some of them are:

-E/Mo ER protter/infuser, stoneguard (330)
-E/Me farmer (with channeling and mantra of resolve) or generic PvE
-E/N blind+price of failure, or general support
-E/A assassin's promise nuker
-...

It's all a matter of preference, in the end..

Aegis, Prot Spirit, Convert Hexes, Res, even draw conditions can help.

You've got an enormous energy pool and not much to do with it since most of the direct damage skills aren't so great. Also consider (for pve) the ritualist skills -- Ancestor's Rage, Splinter Weapon, Protective was Kaoli, even Pure Was Li Ming.

Finally, /P for Fall Back and Sig of Return never hurts.

There are lots of viable secondary combos to give the ele some support capability.

Ele is one of the few professions that actually could use a secondary.

I end up almost always using /Mo for aegis or /A for promise and what not.

I started my ele in early 2006, so the skills list was alot smaller than it is now.
Choosed mesmer secondary because it looked most valuable to me. Being able to interrupt and steal/gain energy while doing it is a nice extra for an ele.

Also mesmer has arcane echo (and the elite version "echo") which can fit in a number of builds. Remembering the FoW (an elite area in Prophecies) 5 man teams using an ele nuker. Was fun to echo meteor shower and blast things off the map with lots of firework.
As for solofarming, mesmer again is a popular secondary. Terra tank uses a clever combination of earth enchants like stone striker which works great with the mesmers "mantra of earth". The result is you take basicly 0 damage and receive a ton of energy when enemies attack.

If using a hard rez isn't your priority, I'd go for mesmer secondary.

And just a word of advise, if you plan on farming alot in the future, create a monk.
The 600/smiter farm duo teambuild is extremely powerfull and works in ALOT of areas of the entire GW universe where other (solo) builds will fail or go way too slow to be productive.

PS: I know some will bash me for utter boredom, but the nightfall elite "Searing Flames" is imo by far the biggest direct dam dealing ele elite.
Got nerfed long ago, but still nice. At fire magic 16, you'll deal out around 106 hp damage on an armor level 60 enemy, with a reload of 2seconds, you can see where that is going. The only downside is your target needs to be burning or the first hit will not deal dam, just cause the burning. Personally I use glyph of imolation, then the first SF hit deals big aoe dam, folllowed by glowing gaze for energy management and then SF again followed by liquid flame. By that time the glyph is reloaded and you can repeat the process. It gets boring, I admit. But as for dealing out quick and large chunks of controlled damage (unlike damage over time aoe spells like savannah heat where enemies just run away from) in pve, Searing Flames wins first prize.

By the sounds of things, you're just past halfway done Prophecies, which means you still have a ways to go before you gain the ability to change up your secondary profession (it's found in the desert, after beating all the desert missions),

Having a monk secondary is handy for a hard res. Other secondaries are dependent for certain builds, but for the most part, fire eles are good at dealing damage in good old PvE.

If you haven't gotten an Elite Skill yet, I'd highly recommend it. If you only have Prophecies, and are stuck as an E/Mo for a while, I'd suggest Glyph of Renewal to double-cast some spells, or Glyph of Energy to re-cast Rodgort's Invocation on recharge. You can obtain Elite Skills fastest by unlocking them in PvP with Balthazar Faction (play any PvP type and win a few rounds) and then by buying an Elite Skill Tome off another player (roughly 8k, but worth it).
